Why should I use wooden spoons?
Kind: Wood is kind to the planet and for your health! When you choose a Jonathan’s® spoon, you are making a healthy choice for you, your home, and the environment

Heat Resistant: Wooden utensils are heat resistant, making them comfortable to use even in high heat cooking such as a wok or boiling syrups! They will not change the temperature of your dish since wood is insulated and does not absorb the heat of your dish.Plastic utensils will degrade over time and leach into your food.

This makes wooden spoons safer and healthier to use than synthetic materials!
Non-Reactive: Wood is a poor conductor of heat, and does not react with acidic ingredients like tomatoes or citrus.
Comfortable and sturdy: Jonathan’s® Spoons are not only sturdy, but ergonomically designed. They are designed to be an extension of the hand, connecting you with your food.
When should I use wooden spoons?
You can use our Jonathan’s® wild cherry spoons for any cooking, baking, stirring, serving, tossing, straining, spreading, flipping, whisking, scooping or scraping task in your kitchen! Hot or cold, wet or dry, we use them in hot boiling sauces, tossing a stir-fry in a hot wok, serving up your famous lasagna, flipping your morning omelet, serving up chili, sharing hors d’oeuvres, or serving a buffet with our one handed tongs.
While our spoons may appear too exquisite for everyday use, they are
crafted with functionality in mind to bring beauty to your daily tasks.
Where are your spoons made?
Our spoons are handcrafted in our little woodshop in the rural town of Kempton, PA, nestled in the serene beauty of Blue Mountain and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. We are about 1 ½ hours Northwest of Philadelphia. Each piece we create resonates with nature’s connection and beauty. Please note that our woodshop is not open to the public due to insurance-related circumstances.
Where does your cherry wood come from?
Our lumber supplier sustainably harvests wild cherry trees primarily in Pennsylvania, as well as NY, and NJ. Over the past 30+ years, we have forged a strong partnership with our lumber supplier. We have strict standards, ensuring that the wood we use comes only from responsibly harvested forests.
Are your spoons considered sustainable?
Yes, our cherry wood comes from responsibly managed forests, from a company that has been FSC Certified since 2001. “FSC certification” ensures that the wood they produce comes from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits.
We deeply appreciate the significance of our precious natural resources and we understand the choices and decisions that we make today impact the future. We are extremely selective with where our lumber comes from, and ensure that our supplier uses only the best forestry practices. Their lumber mill has been in business for over 80 years, and has kept sound forestry practices within their business operations from the start. They understand the vital role that forests play in everyday lives.
Do you put a finish on the spoons?
Yes, we finish our utensils with a light coating of food safe mineral oil. Pure mineral oil is non-drying and is safe to use for butcher blocks, cutting boards and wooden spoons. You can request no oil in the notes section when you checkout.
I am highly sensitive to oils; can I get the spoons unfinished?
We are happy to provide you with a raw cherry utensil. Please note in the checkout process that you would like your products to be sent un-oiled. Our un-oiled inventory is limited, so please allow some extra time for this.

Why are the spoons I received different shades of wood?
Cherry wood is known for its beautiful grain patterns and reddish-brown hue. The color of our utensils varies from blonde to dark cherry color. As cherry wood ages it will become a darker shade. Exposing the spoons to light will speed up this darkening process.
I have a mark on my spoon. What is it and should I be concerned?
One of the characteristics that sets cherry wood apart is the variation of grain and streaks of color. No two trees are the same! We do our very best to make sure the varieties of characteristics you see in the wood will not compromise the functionality of your spoon. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us directly at spoon@woodspoon.com.
So what are those dark lines? Often they are caused by mineral deposits, resin pockets, or natural variations in the grain. Cherry wood may also exhibit dark streaks or knots, which add character and visual interest to the wood. These characteristics are often valued for their unique and rustic appearance, enhancing the overall beauty of the piece.
Sometimes what you are seeing is the “sapwood”. This is the outermost layer of the tree, the layer that transports water and nutrients. This layer, called the “heartwood”, becomes darker and harder as the tree grow. These marks are not defects, but rather the unique attributes of cherry. They add to the overall aesthetic charm and beauty of the spoon, and are a testament to the authenticity of the natural material used.
Care for Spoons :
How do I care for my spoons?
Simply handwash with soap and water, scrub with a Scotch-brite® sponge, and air dry. Please see our “Spoon Care” page.
Do I need to treat my spoons with oil or wax? And how often?
We highly recommend our Spoon Wax as it is made with high-quality natural ingredients, allowing for a longer shelf life. Our wax is a blend of “Wildly Organic” centrifuge extracted raw organic coconut oil and natural beeswax. This blend helps to keep your spoons looking and performing their best, while avoiding any synthetic ingredients. Apply every few months or when your spoons look a bit “chapped” or thirsty. A little bit goes a long way! Treating your spoons to Spoon Wax helps maintain the quality and lifespan of your spoons.
You can also use a food grade mineral oil or your own favorite organic coconut oil, being careful to store your coconut oil in a cool dark place. Be sure to wipe off any excess oil and only use a little bit. We do not recommend cooking oil or olive oil.
Will certain foods discolor the spoons?
When your spoons are well cared for and washed directly after use, most foods will not stain the wood. Sometimes turmeric tends to leave a bit of an after-glow, but the dense grain and hardness of cherry wood helps our spoons retain their beautiful hue. To ensure the health and vitality of your natural wooden spoons, be sure to apply a food grade mineral oil or our Spoon Wax occasionally. This will aid in protecting the spoon from absorbing colors during cooking.
I have a cherry tree in my yard, would you want to buy the wood?
Although we appreciate the thought, Jonathan is not built like a lumberjack, so he prefers to leave that joy for others. We do not process our own lumber as we prefer to spend our time creating wonderful spoons for everyone.
When is it time for a new spoon?
We believe it’s always time to add a new spoon to our kitchens! Jonathan’s Spoons are designed to become your new favorite utensil in your daily cooking. When you find yourself grabbing the same spoons year after year, eventually, the intense heat and stress these utensils endure can eventually cause a crack or split in the wood. We recommend you take this opportunity to refresh your collection, and feel free to be creative in repurposing your old spoon!

We ship intentionally, but not internationally. However, we do ship to our neighbors in Canada. Please contact our office for more information.
Will the Lazy Spoon® catch fire while resting on the edge of the pot or pan?
Our Lazy Spoons® are designed to rest on the side of a pot. We do not recommend you rest them on the side of a shallow frying pan. Never leave a stove unattended, and always use common sense when cooking. If you are using a gas or propane stove, you would never want the flames to reach the sides of your pot or pan, therefore the heat source should never come into contact with the spoon.
Are wooden spoons dishwasher safe?
We do not recommend washing our spoons, or any wooden utensil, in the dishwasher. The harsh detergents and intense heat Please see our Spoon Care section for more dos and don’ts when it comes to caring for your Jonathan’s Spoons.
Can I let my spoons soak in water?
We do not recommend boiling your spoons in water, or soaking them for prolonged periods of time. Long term water saturation may cause the spoons shape to transform or for the spoon to become discolored.
